Goals

Goal 1: Support the development of historic, recreational, and commercial assets to benefit residents, visitors and businesses.

  • Eastpoint Historic Marker Project – identify locations and content for historic markers to develop and advertise the historic character of Eastpoint.
  • Eastpoint Oral History Project – develop videos featuring residents of the community speaking to the history of significant places around Eastpoint. Organize videos into podcast for self-guided tours around Eastpoint.

Goal 2: Enhance the historic working waterfront through water-based and land-based development.

  • Promote Ecotourism – identify and advertise existing opportunities for ecotourism in the community.
  • Channel Dredge – dredge the channel to promote ecotourism, improve boat access, and use dredged sand to create “dredge island” just offshore. “Dredge island” will serve as a sand barrier that protects docks, coastline, and coastal businesses from wave activity during hurricanes or other storms.

Goal 3: Make the community more family-and youth-friendly by expanding public facilities.

  • Establish Community Center – identify a location for a community center.
  • Expand Pedestrian Infrastructure – improve sidewalks, street lighting and other features in Eastpoint that are essential to pedestrian safety and a welcoming environment for families and children.

Goal 4: Build community pride through the redevelopment and/or clean-up of neglected areas, code enforcement, and partnerships with landowners.

  • US 98 Corridor Beautification – clean up remaining debris from previous hurricanes/storms and address damaged buildings that are located along US Highway 98. Dilapidated buildings pose a danger to public safety and also hinder the image of Eastpoint as a beautiful, worthwhile destination – not a pass-through.

Goal 5: Reduce poverty and substance abuse through community-based initiatives.

Goal 6: Increase availability of inland affordable housing.

  • Eastpoint Housing Initiative – partner with various local and regional organizations to improve local housing situation by rehabilitating substandard housing and construction of new workforce housing in the inland areas of Eastpoint.

Goal 7: Improve workforce readiness, especially in young residents, through local partnerships.

  • Improve workforce readiness – organize local and regional partners with a stake in job training to determine how vocational, soft skills, or other job training can be expanded or established to improve workforce readiness of the Eastpoint community.

Goal 8: Encourage business retention, expansion, and recruitment.

  • Support new Franklin County Economic Development Council
